KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

Malla Hovi is a veterinarian specialised in animal health and welfare in organic livestock production, preventative veterinary medicine, public health and dairy cattle health and production. She is currently a Research Fellow of the Department of Agriculture at the University of Reading.

Malla Hovi is involved in research into antimicrobial persistence at farm level, development of decision support systems on vaccine use and welfare assessment on organic farms, and identification of constraints to biosecurity on British cattle and sheep farms.

Ms Hovi has, in the last four years, established the Organic Livestock Research Group (OLRG) within the Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Research Unit (VEERU). The OLRG is involved in several research projects in the field of animal health and welfare in organic livestock production and is one of the authors of the recently published CD-ROM and Web-based compendium of advisory materials on the subject. Apart from her research activities, Malla Hovi is actively involved in advisory work as an animal health consultant to the Organic Advisory Service. She also co-ordinates an EU-funded project, the Network for Animal Health and Welfare in Organic Agriculture. She is a member of the Organic Working Group of the British Cattle Veterinary Association and writes a regular column in the magazine Organic Farming on veterinary issues.
