KEY EXPERIENCE

Dr Heffernan has undertaken a variety of long and medium term assignments in a range of agricultural systems in Africa and Asia. Dr Heffernan has a broad knowledge of livestock based sustainable livelihoods and the delivery of veterinary services to the rural poor. She has been a member of the Development Studies Association since 1995 and established the Livestock Development Studies Group in 1996. 

She was awarded a grant by the Economic and Social Management Research Unit (ESCOR) of the Department For International Development (DFID) to investigate small scale NGO restocking schemes in Northern Kenya in 1996. Her recent research includes the development of decision support tools for restocking programmes and the creation of an analytical framework to better understand the needs and priorities of rural poor livestock keepers.
