Project Management: Management Experience

PAN Livestock has managed a series of livestock and animal health projects in Africa, Asia and South America, providing technical, administrative and managerial support services.

 Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Unit, Botswana 1996 – 2000 (DFID)
 The Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Unit (VEEU) of the Department of Animal Health and Production (DAHP) in Botswana is a long-term project aimed at strengthening the capacity of the DAHP to enhance the sustainable contribution of livestock and wildlife to livelihoods security. The project employed 11 full-time local and expatriate staff, and provided the following outputs:

  • Capacity building for staff in developing cost-effective, sustainable disease control programmes.

  • Development of appropriate information systems.

  • Strengthening surveillance and contingency planning for major diseases.

  • Development of management systems for wildlife health and production.

  • Review of veterinary legislation.

 

National Agricultural Research Project (NARP), Kenya 1992 – 1998 (DFID)
PAN Livestock managed this Link project between the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and the Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Research Unit at The University of Reading. The project provided staff and support to increase the capacity of KARI in sociology, agricultural economics and veterinary epidemiology.
