Sustainable Livestock Production: Smallholder Production

The majority of the world’s livestock production takes place in smallholder systems. Smallholder systems present diverse opportunities and challenges to those concerned in developing support policies, programmes and services that are both appropriate, cost effective and sustainable. PAN Livestock has considerable experience of such systems, and the inherent complexity of production determined by multiple farm, off-farm and non-farm livelihood objectives.

 Recent activities:

• Study of tick borne disease and mastitis problems in smallholder dairy production, Tanzania (DFID).

• Advice on development of smallholder livestock production systems, Malaysia (GTZ).
