Golbal
Epidemiology
and Livestock Information Systems
Consultant
epidemiologist to the FAO Emergency Prevention System for
transboundary animal and plant pests and diseases (EMPRES), and to the
OIE with
reference to the control of transboundary diseases, disease
surveillance and disease modelling – 1993 to date.
Made a preliminary
study of opportunities for DFID partnership with the FAO Emergency
Prevention System for transboundary animal and plant pests and
diseases (EMPRES) – 1998, DFID.
Provision of a
visiting scientist to FAO, Rome, for six months, to develop a novel
methodology, and a working computer based system linking a
geographical information system and a production parameter knowledge
base to livestock production system planning models. This allows
investigation of systems and the use of datasets that are not defined
by conventional administrative boundaries, providing a new decision
support tool to livestock sector planners – 1999, FAO and PAN
Livestock Services.

Health Economics
Joint author of a
report for the DFID Animal Health Research Programme on
"Epidemiology and Economics of Tick-borne Diseases as they Affect
the Livelihoods of the Poor in East and Southern Africa and
India." – 2000, DFID.
Author of "Socio-economic impacts of livestock disease freedom and promotion of
developing country exports", UK based – 2000, FAO.
Consultancy to IFAD,
Rome to evaluate livestock credit and restocking projects. Created
recommendations for the development of decision support tools - 1997,
IFAD.
Provided through the
Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Research Unit (VEERU) the
management of the NATURA / NECTAR 5 project. Responsible for the
co-ordination of activities between EU and Universities in developing
countries in preparing materials for training modules, the writing and
editing of training materials, the planning and organisation of
workshops, proposal writing, and the management and monitoring of
budgets - 1997 to 99, EU.
Veterinary
Services and Disease Control
Development
of training material and guidance manual to establish Quality Systems
in Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories following the OIE Standard -
2000, FAO/IAEA.
With VEERU undertook
research into The Delivery of Veterinary Services to the Rural Poor: A framework for
analysis. The study outputs will improve the effectiveness and
uptake of animal healthcare projects for the rural poor - 1999, DFID.
With
VEERU undertook research into The
Development of Decision Support Tools for Restocking Projects. The
outputs will improve the cost-effectiveness and impact of restocking
projects among destitute pastoralists and subsistence farming
households - 1999, DFID.
